When their son, J.R., was recently diagnosed with ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T), his parents, Joel and Tanya, connected with the A-T Children’s Project (A-TCP) and knew they wanted to do something to help. While they brainstormed fundraising ideas, Joel was already planning on running a half marathon in Detroit and had some friends interested as well. They were able to use this momentum to turn the race weekend into a full-fledged fundraiser for the A-TCP, assembling a team of more than 15 runners and raising over $36,000!
Throughout the race weeke
nd, J.R.’s CureTeam showed up in full force. The team set up a table along the Detroit riverfront near the start and finish lines for the 1-mile, 5k, and kids dash races. The table served as a meet-up spot for their runners and supporters to gather and celebrate together.
J.R’s CureTeam runners registered directly with the Detroit Free Press Marathon and then used JustGiving, an online fundraising platform that connects directly with the A-TCP, to receive donations. They created a special campaign for the race weekend which allowed supporters to either donate directly to the main fundraising page or create their own individual fundraising pages linked to the team’s overall goal. This flexibility meant everyone could contribute in their own way, all working together toward one shared mission.

They were able to set a fundraising goal, share updates and photos along the way and their supporters could write encouraging messages right on the page, creating a real sense of community.
This approach is a great example of how you can get involved in fundraising without having to plan an entire event from scratch. By tapping into an existing community race, walk, or event and pairing it with your own fundraising effort, you can raise awareness, build connections, and make a big impact for A-T research like J.R.’s CureTeam!
If you’re interested in organizing a run or participating in an event for the A-TCP, we’d love to help you get started. Give us a call at +1-954-481-6611 or email fundraising@atcp.org to connect!
